In chapter 18 Abraham is visited by three "men." Although the reader is given a few clues as to their real identity, it is only in 19:1 that we learn two of them, at least, are indeed angels. Scripture often portrays angels as God's servants who carry out some of his plans in the earth. Those plans include delivering messages (cf. Luke 1:11-19; Acts 8:26), executing judgments (cf. 2 Sam. 24:16-17; Acts 12:23), and waging war against demonic forces (cf. Dan. 10:13; Rev. 12:7-8).
